Unique Fundraising Events Should Be Fun

By Janet Brooks

Getting people to generously donate money to a cause is not the easiest task and it requires a particular kind of person to get people to willingly hand over money. Holding unique fundraising events to raise money is a good way to get ahead as the patrons are more likely to participate when they feel that they are benefiting in some way. Generous donations are bound to follow.

Golf tournaments are becoming more and more popular amongst fundraisers. A well set up golf day will entail many small prizes for the groups of four players as they progress in the game and move along the course, ensuring that every player walks away with something small, usually branded advertising merchandise such as caps, tee shirts or pens. The grand prize is awarded at the end of the day to the four-ball with the best score and the charity benefits by getting the entry fees of all the teams.

Another idea is an auction. Getting donations of items such as art and sports memorabilia from willing supporters is the first part. Tickets to the event are usually sold off to groups or tables seating about ten patrons. For the price of the ticket, they will get a nice dinner. Throughout the dinner, various items will be auctioned off, with the objective being to raise the largest amount of money possible.

Consider holding an art auction where the local artists and street artists are invited to showcase their work. Hire a caricaturist to walk among the patrons, with every portrait being sold and the proceeds going to the charitable cause.

Hold a pumpkin growing contest, with the critical planning of the event starting around April, well ahead of time for a Halloween finish. Participants will buy their entry tickets, with many months of anticipation and ongoing competition amongst themselves and have fun in the process. Donated prizes for the largest or strangest looking vegetable and so on could make it an annual event for the community.

A charitable organization such as an animal shelter or children's home could host a quiz night, scavenger hunt or treasure quest on their premises. Each carefully and skillfully planned clue could be exchanged for a task that results in the property being repaired or updated. Walls can be painted, floors repaired and gardens tidied in sections by the participating players for them to progress on their pursuit.

The whole idea behind fundraising is to motivate companies and individuals to part with their money so that another organization or group of people can benefit. From soliciting funds for a group of students to travel to a sports event, to raising money for an animal shelter or a children's charity.

Methods and reasons for raising money are unlimited, being anything from sheltering abandoned animals to repairing historic buildings or caring for orphaned children. Gathering public interest and support is not an easy task, but the goal is to motivate kindness and generosity so that others can benefit.
