Without Bail Bonds Grand Rapids Accused May Spend Time In Jail

By James Hughes

Most people never even consider the possibility that they, their friends or members of their family may be arrested and accused of committing a crime. There are nevertheless thousands of normal people arrested each year, and for a wide variety of reasons. Some just made very stupid decisions, such as drinking and then driving or reacting violently after being provoked. Luckily, with bail bonds Grand Rapids accused do not have to spend time in jail.

Being arrested and accused of committing a crime is a very serious matter indeed. The long term consequences can be devastating. It is therefore very important to seek the services of a qualified lawyer immediately after being arrested. The lawyer will make sure that all the rights of the accused have been honoured and thereafter he will do everything possible to secure the release of his client.

The courts cannot detain every person accused of a crime. They are therefore routinely released. However, the court must be assured that the accused will not breach any of the conditions set by the court. This includes fleeing from justice, trying to influence witnesses and even threatening those involved in the investigation. If the court is satisfied and once the accused has paid the amount set for surety, he can go free.

If an accused does not have access to enough cash to pay his surety, he can approach a bondsman. Bondsmen specialize in providing instant loans to those that must pay their bail. The process is quick and efficient and the accused is normally released within an hour or two. The bondsman will require collateral for the loan and the client will have to sign a written agreement.

The price of lending money from a bondsman can be very high, often as high as 15 percent of the loan amount. The accused will sign an agreement with the bondsman and undertake to pay this fee according to the terms and conditions of the agreement. If he cannot honour his obligations he may lose the assets he pledged as collateral.

Being arrested and facing all the potential consequences of an arrest can cause very high levels of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, too many people fail to read the conditions of the agreement they sign with the bondsman and end up paying dearly in the long term. It is certainly better to leave negotiations with the bondsman in the hands of the lawyer who is better able to act objectively and rationally.

It is very important to adhere to every single condition of bail. If this is not done the consequences can be serious. The accused will be arrested once more and it will be much more difficult to secure a release for a second time. He may also forfeit the amount he posted in the first place. In addition, he may face more criminal charges and eventually receive a much harsher sentence.

Critics say that the system fails society and that accused are allowed to go free to keep on committing more crimes. The right to be treated as innocent until proven to be guilty is a fundamental right, however. Keeping all accused people in custody for months on end is simply not an option.
