What One Must Do In Order To Become A Land Surveyor

The physical earth is not all even land. It is composed of elevations lowlands that makes it hard to measure. We measure the earth for topographical reasons that are essential in map making. It is also important to measure the earth to know its precise dimensions and to pinpoint its exact boundaries. This is utilized to know exact detail of a property when purchasing a titled land. The act of measuring the earth is also known as land survey.

There are many people who are in need of the services a surveyor can provide. Some of these include construction and mining companies, professional survey companies. Real estate developers also work closely with an Alberta land surveyor, and his or her services can be employed by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. If you do not like to work for an employer, you can also be self-employed.

To be a good surveyor one must have mathematical aptitude. This profession entails a clear understanding of the concepts underlying algebra, trigonometry, geometry, drafting and computers. Aside from an aptitude for math, you also need to have good organizational skills, come up with neat and precise presentations, and a good eyesight.

Physical qualities required include a good eyesight and overall physical strength. You must also have the stamina to work outdoors even in bad weather conditions at any time of the year. If you think you do not have the physique of a surveyor, do not worry. Exercise a lot and focus on squats, reaches, stretches, bends and lifts to achieve your goal.

Other personal characteristics needed include a strong ability to visualize objects, sizes and distances. Extreme patience is also a must, along with a keen attention to detail. Good communication skills and the effectivity in working within a group will also help you succeed in your chosen path.

You must complete a series of tests, the first one being the Fundamentals of survey. Once you pass this first test, you will be regarded as a surveying intern. There are many companies offering internship to fresh graduates, and those with good grades have better chances of being accepted.

Companies usually favor those with good scholastic records so if you have earned quite good grades in school, good for you. Apply in a field that is closer to your interest, as this course can cover quite a wide area. Depending on which state you are in, an internship period usually lasts for as long as four years. During this time you will be supervised by a professional surveyor who will also serve as your mentor.

After your internship you will be required to take up another exam, which is the Practice and Surveying Exam. After you pass this one, the next examination is already the final licensure exams administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. You will need to review and prepare both mental and physical faculties in order to pass this one an obtain a license.

Once you have your own license, you are now ready to apply everything that you have learned. All those intensive training has led you to this moment. Licensed surveyors usually make up to thirty thousand dollars or more per year, which makes all those efforts appear worthwhile.
