London is one of the most exciting cities in the world. There are literally hundreds of reasons to visit it, but here are just ten of them.
It's an incredible looking city with an instantly recognisable skyline. There are various places where you can enjoy a bird's eye view, the London Eye, the Monument and the View from The Shard being three more obvious ones, but there are also several restaurants that serve a fine panorama as a side dish.
Although the distinctive skyline of London encompasses many much-loved buildings, we should not forget that it's also one of the greenest cities in the world with eight beautiful royal parks, two botanical gardens, and numerous heaths and commons.
Tours along the River Thames are great for exploring the city at a leisurely pace and giving you alternative views of London's many landmarks. Cruises can be themed, combined with a meal or just accompanied by informed commentary. There is also a regular river bus service throughout the day.
London is a fantastic destination for anyone who enjoys shopping. Some of the most famous shops in the world are to be found here: Harrods, Liberty and Fortnum and Mason to name but three. For those who prefer to shop in a less formal atmosphere, there are markets throughout the city selling just about anything.
London certainly has its fair share of sporting tourists who come to see (amongst other things) premiership football, tennis at Wimbledon, rugby at Twickenham, cricket at the Oval and Lords plus the London Marathon and the Boat Race. In addition, both the Aquatic Centre and the Velodrome of the 2012 Olympics will be open to the general public in 2014.
A visit to London is not complete until you have visited at least one of its many tourist attractions. There's the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, the London Dungeon, Madame Tussauds, Buckingham Palace, London Zoo and the Churchill War Rooms - to name but a few!
London offers the visitor more museums than any other city in the world, and most of them are free. The Natural History Museum in South Kensington is an absolute must. Many of London's art galleries are also free to enter, the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery being conveniently close to one another on the north side of Trafalgar Square.
Many people consider that the theatre of the West End is the jewel in London's crown. There are around 40 historic venues in the area around Drury Lane staging the best in musicals, drama and comedy. For theatre in more intimate surroundings, London also offers a thriving fringe movement.
London offers a wide choice of accommodation, including home stays, budget hostels, self catered apartments, budget hotel chains, boutique hotels and famous five star palaces offering the last word in luxury.
London is a city that is constantly evolving, making it a very exciting place to visit. If you have been here before, then don't expect it to be the same as it was last time!
