Wimbledon is most famous for its yearly tennis competition, and offers a lot to potential residents. The area has excellent rail and tube/underground links to both London and Surrey.

Wimbledon is located in Merton, and is a very large area consisting of Wimbledon, Wimbledon Village, South Wimbledon and Wimbledon Chase. All of these areas are within easy reach of each other on foot or by public transport. In the last six or seven years, the town centre has had a facelift, with a variety of new shops and flats having been built.

Housing choices available

There is a vast range of accommodation throughout Wimbledon. Whilst in the village there are mansions and penthouses, South Wimbledon offers a housing estate, tower blocks and maisonettes. There is also a great market in Wimbledon for people wanting to rent, with a variety of great accommodation on available.

Wimbledon is one of the most lovely places in London to live. Unless you are a millionaire or a well-known tennis player, Wimbledon Village is unlikely to be affordable for you in terms of housing. However, sometimes a flat or apartment may be privately let beneath the usual rates, so it is always worth a look.

In the centre of Wimbledon, flats and houseshares are generally more affordable, and considerably cheaper than those in nearby Putney. If you have a bit more money to spend, there are various fashionable new apartments available, although the price difference between new and old properties can be significant. The cheapest accommodation is in South Wimbledon. Despite having a somewhat rougher feel than Wimbledon town centre, the borough of Merton as a whole has one of the lowest crime rates in London.

Diverse population and culture

'WimbleDurban' is the nickname given to the area of Wimbledon with a large South African community, as well as the community of settlers from the southern hemisphere. All of this results in vibrant weekend nightlife. The English residents in Wimbledon tend to be young professionals, and family homeowners. 'The Village' is the posh area at the top of Wimbledon Hill, and plays host to millionaires and celebrities who frequent the classy bars.

South Wimbledon is a very diverse area indeed, and in particular there are a lot of North African and Polish people there. As a result of this diversity, Wimbledon has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere for visitors. No matter where you are from, you are sure to find people from a wide range of cultures.

Recreation in Wimbledon

Wimbledon Common is home to the Wombles, and with its lake, tearoom, woodland and windmill, makes for a peaceful and calm day out. Wimbledon Park offers water sports, tennis courts, mini golf and playing fields for the more sporty and energetic individual. Because Wimbledon is on the outskirts of London, there are a lot of parks and green space, which is great for spending time outdoors in summer, although it can get somewhat crowded when the weather is nice.
