Protection Around The World With Home Insurance

By Sharon Vanderbin

The world is more connected than ever before, and because of this, personal and business travel is increasing dramatically. There are added benefits to some home insurance policies that will offer coverage in other countries, and many policy holders are not well informed about this.

So you're going on vacation. Or you're a snowbird, heading to Arizona for the winter. There are a lot of expensive things people travel with, including clothes, electronics, and recreational equipment. If something happens to them while you're travelling, will your home insurance cover them? Travel insurance costs can go up when someone pays for baggage coverage, so look into whether your home insurance policy will cover you before choosing that option. This can be a cheaper option, and may also provide coverage if, say, your handbag is lost or stolen in your country of origin.

When personal possessions are removed temporarily from the home, most home insurance policies still provide protection for these items. Liability coverage for personal actions worldwide is usually covered by home insurance policies, which protects you if you cause someone injury or damage their property.

Typical times that your home insurance would cover loss or damages:

You find yourself in the mountains in Switzerland, and your camera goes tumbling off the cliff just as you line up for the perfect photo. Covered or not covered? If you have a comprehensive home insurance policy, you'll have coverage for the lost camera, subject to your deductible, no matter where in the world you lose it!

You could be on a surfing trip to Hawaii and may cause injury to another surfer by accident. Protected here, or not? Your home insurance policy has liability insurance included as part of it, and this would provide protection to you if you caused another person personal injury in another country, and are held liable for their injuries.

It's the end of your best day of your golf trip. And decide to go have a few drinks in the club with your fellow players. When you come out, someone has stolen your golf clubs. Insured or not insured? Your personal property is covered anywhere in the world, so your policy should definitely respond. There are limits for certain types of property such as sports equipment, so stolen or lost golf clubs may not be fully protected. Check with your insurance agent to make sure you have enough coverage.

You take your RV and drive to the California coast. You are out for the day on a hike, and return to find that your laptop, and your TV and entertainment unit have been stolen from the RV itself. Are these items insured or not? Since your laptop was only temporarily taken out of the home, your home insurance policy will most likely provide protection here. If your TV was attached to the RV itself, it will fall under your RV's insurance policy.

Having knowledge that your home insurance policy offers you protection as you vacation provides you some peace of mind.
